October: Bloodiest Month

Today brought news that seven more US service members were killed in Iraq.

In a shopping center in Basra, 20 civilians were killed and 40 wounded.

The deaths today cap "the bloodiest month for American troops since January," bringing the total number of US casualties to 2,025.

While the death toll in Iraq rises, a new poll (aired on CNN today) indicates that a majority (53%) now believe the Bush administration lied about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, our rationale for going to war.

It's great that people are finally coming to their senses, but for the seven US soldiers killed today and the 20 innocent civilians, it's too little, too late.

The Pumpkin Gospel

James Dobson's Focus on the Family has a wholesome Halloween activity idea on their website, called The Pumpkin Gospel.

What you need:
-pumpkin
-newspapers
-sharp knife
-spoon
-large bowl
-candle
-matches
-Bible

Interesting. It used to be that god-fearing evangelicals just turned off the porch light and left their kids sulking in their bedrooms without candy. Times apparently have changed and now Halloween is a day to celebrate--probably due to Mullah Dobson and his extremist associates being all giddy over their own treat earlier today in the Bush nomination of Samuel Alito to the supreme court.

So, in the spirit of the new Halloween-Loving Jesus, please welcome the SCOTUS Trinity of Horrors: Thomas, Scalia and Alito

A New Low

A new Washington Post/ABC News Poll "found that 55 percent of the public believes the Libby case indicates wider problems 'with ethical wrongdoing' in the White House. And by a 3 to 1 ratio, 46 percent to 15 percent, Americans say the level of honesty and ethics in the government has declined rather than risen under Bush.

In the aftermath of the latest crisis to confront the White House, Bush's overall job approval rating has fallen to 39 percent, the lowest of his presidency in Post-ABC polls. Barely a third of Americans -- 34 percent -- think Bush is doing a good job ensuring high ethics in government, which is slightly lower than President Bill Clinton's standing on this issue when he left office."

Ouch. A lower rating on ethics than Clinton. That must hurt. So much for the Bush administration's promise to restory honesty and integrity to the White House.
